Waste Not, Want Not: Finding Value in What Remains

Slide image

At The ANJELMS Project, every piece of cloth begins with a story.
A story of fibres grown from the earth, of hands that spin and weave, of natural dyes, block printing, stitching and craftsmanship passed through generations. By the time a textile reaches our studio, it already carries the work of many people and countless hours of skill and care.

This is why we have always found it difficult to think of fabric as waste.

Yet even within slow fashion and handcrafted production, remnants are inevitable. Small offcuts remain after garments are cut. Sample fabrics accumulate over time. Naturally dyed textiles develop variations that make them unsuitable for a particular collection. Beautiful cloth can find itself without a clear purpose despite the value it holds.

The question for us has always been: what happens next?

A different perspective

Seeing Possibility in the Leftovers

The fashion industry often measures value by perfection and efficiency. Anything outside those parameters is frequently discarded. We choose to see things differently.

Our Waste Not, Want Not philosophy emerged from a desire to honour every stage of a textile's journey and to acknowledge the resources already invested in its creation. Rather than viewing leftover materials as an inconvenience, we see them as an opportunity for creativity, resourcefulness and connection.

Each remnant represents a fabric that has already lived a life. It may have been hand-spun, handwoven, naturally dyed, block printed or embroidered. It has already passed through skilled hands and carries a story worth continuing.

meaningful creations begin with what remains

A Different Way Forward

In a culture that often encourages constant consumption, choosing to work with what already exists can feel quietly radical.

It asks us to slow down.
To notice.
To appreciate the potential in something that might otherwise be overlooked.

Whether it takes the form of a hand-stitched quilt, a bundle of fabric remnants or a collection of creative supplies waiting for their next purpose, Waste Not, Want Not is ultimately about recognising value where others may not.

Because every piece of cloth represents a journey. Every remnant holds a story.

Our philosophy is embracing beauty of transformation. One of the most visible expressions of this philosophy can be found in our hand-stitched quilts, created by The Stitching Ladies in Pushkar using remnants from previous collections, naturally dyed textiles, and treasured pieces of handwoven cloth.

Through thoughtful composition and careful hand stitching, what once existed as separate fragments is transformed into a cohesive and meaningful whole.

No two quilts are ever alike.

Each reflects the creativity of its maker, the materials available at the time, and the beauty that emerges when we choose to work with what already exists. Yet the story does not end with our quilts. Many textile remnants continue their journey through our Khadi Patch Packs and Cloth & Craft Collection, where makers, quilters, textile artists, menders, and curious creatives can give them new purpose.

Filled with handwoven fabrics, naturally dyed cloth, block-printed remnants, yarns, trims, and textile treasures from The ANJELMS Project archives, it celebrates the idea that even the smallest piece of cloth can become part of something meaningful. By sharing these materials, we invite others into the practice of creative reuse, where resourcefulness becomes not a limitation, but a source of inspiration.

While Waste Not, Want Not is rooted in environmental responsibility, Not only it goes beyond sustainability, is also about something deeper. It is about respect.

Respect for the resources used to create a textile.
Respect for the artisans whose knowledge and labour brought it into existence.
Respect for traditional practices that teach us to value materials rather than discard them.

Many of the communities we work with have long practiced forms of resourcefulness that modern sustainability movements are only beginning to rediscover. Repairing, repurposing, patching and reusing have historically been acts of necessity, creativity and care.

We see Waste Not, Want Not as a continuation of this wisdom.
