Explore the beauty of Kandu—where tradition meets sustainability.
Fabric Overview: Kandu is a medium-coarse, lightweight textile crafted from brown cotton, spun and hand-woven using the traditional ambara charaka method. This unique fabric offers warmth in the winter and breathability in the summer, making it perfect for year-round wear. Free from harsh chemicals and dyes, Kandu is an ideal choice for those who prioritize sustainability and eco-conscious living.
Natural Color & Unique Transformation: The natural color of Kandu comes from the water-soluble tannins found in the cotton fibers, creating a rich, earthy brown tone. As the fabric is washed, the tannins release, causing the color to deepen over time. Unlike chemically dyed fabrics, Kandu's color intensifies over the first 10 washes before stabilizing. Depending on the season, the shade of brown may vary, adding to the fabric's unique charm.
Eco-Friendly Dyes: While Kandu's natural brown color is the highlight, we occasionally use natural dyes to enhance its beauty. These dyes are derived from plant and mineral sources, such as indigo (blue), iron rust (black), pomegranate peel (yellow), Acacia catechu (brown), and Alizarin (scarlet red). Each dye is carefully selected for its eco-friendly properties, ensuring that the fabric remains true to its sustainable ethos.
Environmentally Conscious Production: Kandu is produced using rain-fed brown cotton, which requires negligible groundwater, making it one of the most water-efficient textiles available. Unlike conventionally grown white cotton, which demands over 20,000 liters of water per kilogram, Kandu’s sustainable process ensures minimal environmental impact. Additionally, Kandu is biodegradable, further reinforcing its commitment to the planet.
Care Instructions: To keep Kandu fabric in optimal condition, we recommend hand-washing it separately or with similar colors in cold water using mild, eco-friendly detergents. Dry the fabric in the shade to preserve its integrity. As our fabrics are not pre-washed, expect a slight shrinkage of 2.5% to 3.5%. Over time, the starch used in the weaving process will fade, leaving the fabric soft and supple after a few washes.
