The Stitching Project

WOODBLOCK PRINTERS, EMBROIDERERS, AND TAILORS

Pushkar, Rajasthan

The heartbeat of The ANJELMS Project

Based in rural Pushkar, The Stitching Project is a solar-powered social enterprise started by Australian textile artist Fiona Wright and her husband Praveen.

They provide fair work conditions, vocational training and a living wage to remote artisans who produce high-quality work, changing their lives – and those of their families – in the process.

our Official Partner of 11 years

As long-term partners, we work closely with The Stitching Project to create each and every one of our garments, and in turn, they rely on us to provide them with ongoing work. Throughout our partnership we’ve been committed to visiting regularly in person (almost every year!), and during our most recent visit in march 2025, we were honoured to strengthen our bonds with the individuals who make up this incredible organisation.

After living in India for many years, Fiona is now based back in Australia and running the logistical side of The Stitching Project remotely, while Praveen remains on the ground in India, managing the workers and employing and training new recruits.

Spinning & Weaving

Our khadi cotton begins its journey in a small village 80 kilometres from The Stitching Project, where a husband-and-wife team hand-spin and hand-weave every thread. She spins raw local cotton into spools, and he weaves them on a hand-operated loom to create about nine metres of soft, breathable khadi each day. Together, they craft every roll of fabric used in our collections — around 400 garments per season — embedding each piece with their skill, care, and quiet dedication.

Will you ever view fabric the same way again? We certainly won’t.

Dyeing & Block-Printing

All our fabrics are naturally dyed and block-printed at The Stitching Project, where traditional craft meets sustainable practice.

Our prints begin as digital designs in Western Australia, then come to life in India, where Mr. Satnaryan hand-carves wooden blocks and master printer Pawan applies each design with care and precision — creating textiles that are as ethical as they are beautiful.

Using GOTS-certified plant-based dyes like indigo and pomegranate, Praveen hand-dyes each piece to achieve rich, earthy tones. Learn more about our dyes here.

Cutting & Sewing

Once the dyed or block-printed fabric is ready, it’s time to make it into a garment!

Master patternmaker and cutter, Bulbir Ji, is responsible for creating the patterns and our first samples for the designs dreamed up in our Australian studio, which are then handed over to six very skilled women who operate the sewing machines.

They meticulously assemble each item, applying their craftsmanship to ensure smooth seams, even hems, and the high-quality finish characteristic of ANJELMS garments.

Handstitching & Embroidery

All handstitching and embroidery are performed by a group of women affectionately called The Stitching Ladies, who exclusively create handstitched pieces for the project.

Through this initiative, they receive training, fair income, and the flexibility to work from home, allowing them to support their families while preserving traditional handcraft. Beyond skill-building, the program fosters connection and friendship across castes, empowering women to create both beautiful textiles and lasting change within their communities.
