Fair Wages, Fair Prices : Why Ethical Fashion Costs What It Costs

Looking beyond the price Tag

There is a question we hear often in ethical fashion

Why does it cost more?

It is a fair question.

In a world accustomed to heavily discounted clothing and endless new arrivals, the price of a handmade garment can feel surprising at first glance. But behind every price tag is a story of choices — choices about people, time, materials and the kind of fashion industry we want to support.

At The Anjelms Project, we believe that clothing should honour the hands that make it.

We put the makers first, working with artisan communities across India whose skills have been nurtured and passed down through generations. Their work is not measured only by speed or output, but by knowledge, care and extraordinary craftsmanship.

A hand block printed textile may require dozens, even hundreds, of precise impressions. A hand-stitched piece can take days to complete. Naturally dyed fabrics rely on patient processes that cannot be rushed.

Every stage requires skilled hands and time — two things that are often undervalued in modern fashion.

Fast fashion has accustomed us to prices that rarely account for the true cost of making clothes. Low prices are often made possible because someone, somewhere, bears the burden — whether through underpaid labour, unsafe working conditions or environmental degradation.

Ethical fashion seeks to ask a different question:

What would clothing cost if every person involved was treated fairly?

A fair price includes fair wages.

It allows artisans to earn a living from their skills, support their families, and continue practising traditional crafts that might otherwise disappear. It creates opportunities for communities to thrive rather than simply survive. It recognises that handmade work carries both cultural and human value.

It also means investing in processes that respect the planet.

At The Anjelms Project, we are committed to natural plant-based dyes, handmade techniques, repurposing textile remnants and creating systems of transparency that allow our customers to understand the journey behind each garment. These decisions are rarely the cheapest or fastest options, but they are choices rooted in integrity and long-term care.

When you purchase an ethically made garment, you are not simply buying fabric and thread. You are supporting a network of makers, preserving cultural knowledge, and contributing to a fashion system built on dignity and respect.

A fair price is not the cost of a garment alone.

It is the value of time. The value of craftsmanship. The value of knowing who made your clothes and that they were treated with care in the process.

Because when fashion honours both people and the planet, a garment becomes more than something we wear.

It becomes a connection between makers and wearers — a story of craft, culture and community, stitched together with intention.
