Join master Ajrakh artisan Sufiyan Khatri for a rare two-day immersive masterclass exploring the history, philosophy and traditional processes behind one of India's oldest block printing traditions.

This masterclass offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a practising Ajrakh artisan and gain a deeper understanding of the patience, skill and artistry behind this remarkable textile tradition.

The first day introduces the foundations of Ajrakh through storytelling, demonstrations and hands-on block printing. Guided by Sufiyan, you'll create your own hand printed bandana scarf while learning about the cultural significance and meticulous craftsmanship behind this centuries-old practice.

On the second day, you'll go beyond printing to experience one of the defining stages of Ajrakh production: traditional natural indigo dyeing. Through demonstrations and practical learning, Sufiyan will share the knowledge, techniques and processes that transform printed cloth into finished Ajrakh textiles.

Designed for those wanting to go beyond a simple introduction, this immersive masterclass is ideal for makers, textile enthusiasts, artists, designers and anyone passionate about traditional craft.

Over two days, you'll gain a richer understanding of the complete Ajrakh process — from block printing through to natural indigo dyeing —l earning directly from master artisan Sufiyan Khatri in an intimate workshop setting.

No previous experience is required.

Location

This workshop will be held at The Anjelms Project Studio, Fibonacci Centre – Main Space, 19 Blinco Street, Fremantle WA 6160.

Parking is available on-site and around the centre.

What to bring

Please wear clothing suitable for working with natural dyes. An old T-shirt or apron is recommended, as some of the natural pigments may permanently stain fabric.
