Meet Kavisha. I have been blessed every Wednesday at the Fremantle Fibonacci Centre, where our Store @ Fib is, by the rehearsal of the women choir she has been running. I met Kavisha a decade ago when she sang at the Fremantle Nectar Festival. Kavisha is one of those humans who touches your heart as soon as you meet her. Her generosity and her life experience come together with amazing stories of her travels and the people she has met.

Tell us a little about yourself

I come from a generous Catholic hybrid migrant family. My mother is Irish/Scottish and Burmese and my father is Italian. We come from a musical family who had a family café in Perth City where all the family of different generations worked together.

I am a singer songwriter and I am passionate about social justice. I am a meditator and this affects my art. I also love seeing people discover and have fun with their voice. I am a choir director and for the last 2 and a half years have lead the Heartplace Choir based in Fremantle at the Fibonacci Centre

What led you to Fremantle?

Our family migrated here from England in 1962 on the boat the ORION. I was 3 years old.

What is the story behind your print?

My print is of a boat filled with migrants coming to Australia. I also included refugees as well. I am very alert to the migrant story as we were migrants here and also to the refugees as well as my mother was a child refugee. She and her family escaping the Japanese army walked into India via Nagaland (East India) during World War 2. In my print this boat is delivering us all to a new world where we learn and grow together in peace and harmony in the new world. Fremantle is very dear to us as it welcomed us here. 

What are your favourite spots in Fremantle and any tips for visitors or newcomers?

I love the creative energy of Fremantle as there is a great coming together of historical spots, coffee shops, bookshops, galleries, artists, musicians and creative communities. I love that there is a working port which still has traces of the Italian, Portuguese and Greek fishing communities.

Some of my many favourite spots include the Fibonacci Centre, Fishing Boat Harbour, Kidogo Art House on Bathers Beach, J Shed artist studios, and the Fremantle Markets. Just wander the Harbour City and enjoy. Be curious as there are many surprises!
