Rabari embroidery, originating from the nomadic community in the Kutch region of Gujarat, India, is a vibrant textile art form characterized by intricate mirror work and bold patterns. Traditionally, Rabari women begin learning embroidery at a young age, creating pieces for their dowries and daily use. The designs often depict aspects of their pastoral lifestyle, mythology, and the natural environment, serving as a visual narrative of their cultural heritage.
Gita, from the Rabari community of Kutch, grew up without learning embroidery—a tradition once essential for women before marriage. The practice was later abandoned as it delayed marriages and was costly for families.
However, after her wedding, Gita became fascinated by her mother-in-law’s embroidery and began learning from her in 2022. Though challenging at first, she practiced daily and soon started selling handcrafted pieces,
Gita took her practice one step further by completing her studies at Somaiya Kala Vidya, a modern design school in Kutchh.
For Gita, Rabari embroidery is more than an art—it’s an identity. Inspired by nature, Rabari women have long translated their surroundings into intricate designs.
Now, Gita dreams of turning this craft into a business, designing and selling her own embroidered creations while preserving her heritage.
We are grateful to be able to contribute to the realisation of Gita's dreams by stocker her incredible works!
