Kullvi Whims

Spinners, weavers, natural dyers and knitters working with local wool.
Located in the Kullu Valley, Himalayas

In the heart of the Kullu Valley is a group of women revitalising their traditional craft practices

Founded in 2012 by Nisha Subramaniam and Brighu Acharya, Kullvi Whims stands for the beauty inherent in slow craft processes which match the seasonal rhythms of mountain life.

Our most recent catch up in March 2025

We came across Kullvi Whims at DASTKAR Delhi (craft fair) in January 2024, after chasing down Brighu to ask where his wonderfully crafted patchwork sweater was from.

This chance encounter landed us in an unexpected world of colourful Kullvi treasures and a marvellous story of the interdependent community systems they are cultivating.

The women are all traditional artisans, who learnt their craft practices of spinning, weaving, knitting and crochet from their family members and have mostly practiced their crafts for themselves, weaving pattus and blankets or knitting sweaters, mojiris and socks

They source indigenous wool from a local pastoral tribe called the gaddis who shephard their herds across thousands of kilometres of traditional pasture lands.

They then go onto naturally dye the wool with local flora and fauna. These pieces truly tell the story of the Himalayan Landscape from sheep to sweater, and nourish the communities economy from a sustainable root level.

This cooperative is more than just a business; it is a powerful story of women leading the preservation of indigenous knowledge and revitalising traditional handloom practices.

We are proud to be contributing to the global exposure of Kullvi Whims by stocking their hand-made garments, clothing that truly nurtures the well-being of an entire community system.
