Artisan Craftmanship
ORIGIN OF KANDU COTTON
Kandu is more than just an initiative; it is a transformative journey towards building a more sustainable and equitable future for rural farmers and artisans. Focusing at revitalization of brown cotton cultivation in Karnataka, it embodies a multifaceted approach to sustainable agriculture, social equity, and economic empowerment, particularly for smallholder farmers and women weavers.
We enhance Kandu’s beauty with natural dyes—indigo, pomegranate peel, iron rust, and more—all sustainably sourced.
Naturally-colored Brown Cotton
The emphasis on rain-fed, pest- and drought-resistant varieties of cotton highlights a profound commitment to ecological sustainability and the revival of traditional farming practices that honor the land and its resources. By prioritizing empathetic production processes, Kandu not only showcases innovative agricultural practices but also represents a movement dedicated to fostering resilient rural livelihoods. This approach enhances the sustainability of cotton farming while simultaneously strengthening the resilience of farming communities in the face of climate change.
Women Empowerment through traditional skills
By providing women with the tools, training, and opportunities to contribute, the Kandu Initiative not only elevates their status and recognizes their invaluable contributions to the community but also empower women weavers economically by involving them in the handloom value chain. This collaborative efforts not only support their livelihoods directly but also enriches the traditional cultural tapestry of textile production.
Care Instructions
gentle cold wash
Hand-wash separately in cold water. Expect slight shrinkage (2.5% - 3.5%) and a soft, supple fabric after a few washes. Kandu’s earthy brown hue deepens with each wash, creating a unique, personalized shade that stabilizes after 10 washes.
Air Dry in Shade
After washing, avoid wringing it out to preserve the delicate textile quality and lay it flat or hang to air dry in a shaded area to prevent fading and protect the fabric from the harsh effects of direct sunlight. Only iron on low heat.
Avoid harsh detergents
To preserve the integrity of the colors and material, opt for mild, gentle pH-neutral detergents that are suitable for delicate fabrics.
