Artisan Craftmanship
Crafting Change Through Stitching
SilaiWali, derived from the Hindustani words Silai (stitching) and Wali (a feminine suffix), translates to “seamstress.”
Based in New Delhi, India, SilaiWali is a social enterprise that upcycles waste fabric from the apparel industry into beautifully handcrafted pieces made by Afghan women refugees. Each creation embodies a thoughtful approach to sustainability, giving new life to discarded materials while creating opportunities for economic independence.
SUPPORT ARTISAN CRAFTMANSHIP
The artisan team at SilaiWali is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and skill of Afghan women rebuilding their lives in New Delhi.
Through the traditional arts of stitching, embroidery, and crochet, they transform waste fabric into one-of-a-kind pieces that tell stories of heritage, perseverance, and beauty. Every handcrafted item carries deep cultural significance, supporting sustainable livelihoods and empowering its makers.
Rooted in Fair Trade principles, SilaiWali celebrates the spirit of cultural diversity, sustainability, and community rebuilding — a true reflection of craftsmanship with purpose.
Care Instructions
gentle cold wash
Spot cleaning with cold water and mild soap is recommended. Only cold gentle handwash if needed.
Air Dry in Shade
After washing, avoid wringing it out to preserve the delicate textile quality and lay it flat or hang to air dry in a shaded area to prevent fading and protect the fabric from the harsh effects of direct sunlight. Only iron on low heat.
Avoid harsh detergents
To preserve the integrity of the colors and material, opt for mild, gentle pH-neutral detergents that are suitable for delicate fabrics.
